Electrical work in an extension

When a home extension is being planned, it can be a stressful experience deciding upon which builder to use, which roofer, which electrician and organising the different trades to carry out the works.

As your local ELECTRICIAN IN BRIDPORT, we are here to assure you that we can take some of the stress away, at least, when it comes to the electrical works that you require.

New Extension Wiring

You may not yet have planned where everything is going but it’s a good time to start considering where everything may go inside your new home extension. The wiring is important to get right first time and for that reason, think about:

•    Number of Plug Sockets
•    Light Fittings
•    TV or Data points
•    Other Electrical Equipment

Number of Plug Sockets

Whilst there is no minimum number of plug sockets required by law, there are recommendations for new and existing buildings. Moreover, more is definitely more when it comes to plug sockets. Reliance on extension leads can mean overloading and fire risk not to mention trailing wires and trip hazards.

Consider carefully how many sockets are needed. Double sockets are always best and with modern entertainment equipment, portable devices and charging equipment we always need more. Trying to save money by limiting the number of sockets that are installed may lead to additional costs, mess, and disruption further down the line.

Light Fittings

Lighting is important in any room and none more so than kitchens and bathrooms (INSERT HYPERLINK PLEASE)( https://www.tyne-electrical.co.uk/service/bathroom-lighting-electrician-colyton ). These rooms in particular should be considered carefully for lighting designs. The right design can add value to your home and improve the mood and visibility in these areas.

Consider how many spotlights you may need in a large living room extension. We are here to guide you with some ideas so if you are struggling with lighting ideas or numbers of lighting points, we are able to assist.

TV or DATA points

Nearly everyone in 2024 wants their television mounted to the wall with no cables visible. This is far easier to achieve when the wiring is being installed in a new extension. A hidden electrical socket behind the television is great at achieving a modern look in any room.

Consider if you would like data points to enable stronger internet or hard-wired devices. Most televisions can accept a hard-wired internet connection and there is the ability to install internet mesh systems (Wi-Fi booster points) with a data point in the new room.

Other Electrical Equipment

Where the new extension contains a bathroom or a kitchen, do you need larger cables for cooker or electric shower supplies?

Now is the ideal time to have any extra cables installed for these high-powered electrical appliances. Any single oven, double oven or hob should have a dedicated electrical circuit requiring a cable is installed for that device.

Think ahead

Whilst there are exposed ceilings and walls, it is the ideal time to consider if you have any additional wiring needs in the outdoor spaces of the home. It is sometimes far easier and cheaper to install cables for future planned equipment when access is easier during building works.

A power supply to the garden shed, summerhouse or other outbuilding is great for chest freezers, lighting indoors and security lighting so you can find your way to the building on a dark night.

Garden lighting is also worth a consideration. If you are planning on installing new or replacement garden lighting in the future then its important to think about it now so that a new cable can be installed and terminated safely for future use.
